FIFTY@FIFTY-Tracey Jackson talks With 50 People On Being 50: #46 SIMON DOONAN

At age 60, author and Barney’s Creative Ambassador At Large, SIMON DOONAN has seen and done it all and his outlook on life after 50 is not only inspiring, but something we could all learn from. As the man behind the amazing window displays at New York’s famous Barney’s store-DOONAN has allowed his creative expressions to shape who he is, and allowed him not to have any preconceptions about people or the world. Never being a person caught up in ‘positions’, he’s held high senior posts like Executive VP and flown the Concorde to Europe with the owners of Barneys, vs riding the subway to work and having a simple cubicle and a desk at work. His secret?
Value creative expression and loving what you do vs ‘position and prestige’.

FIFTY@FIFTY-Tracey Jackson talks With 50 People On Being 50: #45 JUDY COLLINS

Activist/Singer-Songwriter JUDY COLLINS  talks about her life, dealing with her son’s suicide and helping others deal with loss and pain in this edition of FIFTY@FIFTY (#45) w/ TRACEY JACKSON.

At 72, Collins has led an amazing life filled with life, love and music- but like many of us, she’s dealt with loss in a way that inspires others (through her music, speaking engagements and books) to ‘not retreat.’ “The music carried me through and allowed me to sort it out-musically,” says Collins in the film. She offers many useful solutions to dealing with loss and grief during the interview and indicates that the process of talking about ‘it’ and writing about ‘it’ help towards one’s recovery, sobriety, meditation and prayer.

Ms. Collins advises to ‘don’t dispair, keep interested and don’t let your friendships slide’ as secrets to her reinvention.

FIFTY@FIFTY-Tracey Jackson talks With 50 People On Being 50: #44 CHRISTINA HAAG

Actress/Author CHRISTINA HAAG talks about life, love, relationships and reinvention at midlife in this edition of FIFTY@FIFTY w/ TRACEY JACKSON. Haag, at 51 has reinvented herself and got out of the ‘safe zone’ of what she was most comfortable doing, and written a book that was inside her and itching to come out. At 43, she was diagnosed with Cancer and it was dealing with the fears and the unknown which allowed her to find the courage and develop a great deal of faith to transform.

After living a life as an actress, retelling ‘other people’s words’…she knew it was time to ‘tell her story’- and she did. Her NY Times Bestseller book COME TO THE EDGE is a book about her romance and friendship with John Kennedy Jr. and has been a huge book for her.

"Audrey Hepburn used to wake up everyday and do something," says Haag…. " she’d forgive herself before the day began….", and that’s something I try to do myself everyday.

Let Christina’s story on FIFTY@FIFTY inspire you….

FIFTY@FIFTY-Tracey Jackson talks With 50 People On Being 50: #42 SALLY QUINN

At 70 years old, SALLY QUINN has led an exciting life as a reporter and columnist for the Washington Post, CBS News, as well as being an author of several novels, and currently manages, writes and directs the ‘On Faith’ section of the Washington Post’s website. Married to former Washington Post head, Ben Bradlee (20 years older than Quinn), she stays active, involved and engaged in her work and ‘loves what she does’ (a crucial element in her keys to staying young). Sally manages to have ‘sacred time’ several times a week to allow her personal pleasures (dancing classes, yoga, swimming, exercising etc) and advises that for her ‘retirement is not in my vocabulary’. While not for everyone, she advises exposing yourself to new thoughts and ideas, and learn something new everyday..and to ‘make things happen for yourself’.

After years behind a typewriter as a reporter, Quinn has ‘reinvented herself’
via the Internet as a blogger and oversees the popular ‘On Faith’ section for the Washington Post (you can find links to her and On Faith below). As an early adopter of new technology, she taught herself (and learned) how to apply and transfer her old skills to the new ways of engaging an audience….and you can too!

ROBIN SAIDMAN, head of Duck & Weave (http://www.duckandweave.co)-

For Duck & Weave founder Robin Saidman, shirting became an early obsession. Shirts with detachable collars and studs were ‘de rigueur’ at school. Later as a fashion photographer in London, he developed a photographic style inspired by the 1960 movie Breathless featuring the same collarless shirts from Jermyn Street.

As a photojournalist his work has taken him to indigenous communities in Africa and Asia where he has experimented with importing local artisan made shirts with natural dyes and organic cotton. The outcome of these trials is the Duck and Weave Organic Philosophy line that embraces both indigenous and industrial production with an eco-friendly bias.

A perfect shirt is a beautiful thing. And a perfect shirt is often hard to find. I think I have found the perfect light weight shirt and before summer is over, I wanted to share it with you.

Robin Saidman who has been a fashion and travel photographer for many years decided he wanted to create the perfect shirt. He took seven years. He tried endless combinations and searched the world for the best cottons.

He took a stab at having them made in India and then discovered nothing was quite as good as the ole USA. He played around with cuts and styles and did endless research. And in my opinion come up with the perfect shirt. Hear Robin’s story of personal career ‘evolution’, and his tips on how to ‘follow your dream!’

             FIFTY@FIFTY-Tracey Jackson talks With 50 People On Being 50: #39 BEN BRADLEE From: TraceyDJackson1  | Aug 21, 2011  | 97 views FIFTY@FIFTY-Tracey Jackson talks With 50 People On Being 50: #39 BEN BRADLEE

BEN BRADLEE (who turns 90 this month) is an important icon in the American historical landscape, and is a vice president at-large of The Washington Post. As executive editor of the Post from 1968 to 1991, he became a national figure during the presidency of Richard Nixon, when he challenged the federal government over the right to publish the Pentagon Papers and oversaw the publication of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein’s stories documenting the Watergate scandal.

Today he still works and goes into the office (when in Washington…also-the Bradlees also have a home in East Hampton-the original GREY GARDENS home-which they restored), stays active, and secretly admits to having lots of young friends. Bradlee has lived a great life filled with good values, and like his Mother and Father…not been afraid of ‘hard work.’ He believes that ‘luck’ is a matter of making the right choices…(should you get lucky to get a good break).

FIFTY@FIFTY-Tracey Jackson talks With 50 People On Being 50: #34 PAUL WILLIAMS

Join screenwriter/director/author TRACEY JACKSON in conversation with legendary actor/singer songwriter PAUL WILLIAMS (70) on the ‘best years of his life’ (50 to 70). A true legend in show business- Paul Williams has written some of the greatest songs of all time…acted in some of the greatest movies of all time…and is currently writing ‘Happy Days’-the musical.

On March 15, 1990 (at 49 1/2 yrs old) Williams ‘got sober’ and began a new chapter in his life. Having ‘clear vision’ and a new sense of communicating and relating to others, he ‘found himself’ (at 50) and learned to ‘trust his unconscious’ and ‘deal with life in life’s terms.’

Williams shares great wisdom when he advises to “Play-don’t work”, and “Don’t let the clock scare you (and don’t spend a lot of time looking at it)”-keys to his continued success in the world of music and entertainment. “It’s never too late to stop abusing,” said Williams. “I’ve now learned to say ‘I don’t know how to do that-and I ask others for help….don’t suffer alone-ask for help”.

Listen, learn, and share the wise words from someone that’s been there and back. Look for new projects from Paul (working with the amazing Electronica act DAFT PUNK, and the musical HAPPY DAYS).

Join screenwriter/director/author TRACEY JACKSON in conversation with author and Professor of English (University of British Columbia) IRA NADEL (67 years old) who is ‘always seeking something new’ and stays ‘curious.’ Nadel suggests we ‘talk to people about the things you love’ as well as ‘think about DOING vs not doing things…stay active..energetic and have drive and determination in everything we do. He INSPIRES his students and others by teaching ‘it’s not ever about failure..it’s about our own personal drive and DESIRE. One more great example of someone that has created a lifestyle and mantra for longevity. While he indicates he ‘doesn’t ever think about his age,’ Nadel finds it ‘remarkably stimulating to be around a lot of young people (students) all the time.’ and advises everyone to ‘look at yourself in the mirror, and find what it is that you love to do..and do it.” Great advice Ira…thank you for sharing with us…;-)
